3 Reasons You Should Practice Mindful Photography for Your Mental Health

Mindful Photography - taking photographs that are meaningful, capturing moments where you find balance, peacefulness or a feeling of connection. Mindful Photography is not for another's gaze, it's for yourself, it's a self care.

Mindful Photography is slowing down and looking around the world for sparks of emotion within yourself. What brings you joy, pain, laughter, peace, anger - these are your leads for your practice. Seek out what you want to feel. If you want to feel joy, go on that walk or journey and be open to joy, look for what brings joy to your body. For me, walking in my neighborhood brings me joy. Here are a few examples of Mindful Photography where I found joy.

Now, 3 reasons why should you practice Mindful Photography for your mental health.

  1. Promotes Presence + Focus. This practice encourages you to focus on the present; observing the world around you without judgement. Practice of non-judgement can reduce stress, relieve pressure and help you learn to see the bigger picture. When you are in the present moment, and you breathe deeply, you see new details come alive: light, textures, colors etc. This meditative practice, helps quiet the mind and bring clarity.

  2. Encourages Reflection + Self Expression Practicing mindful photography can help you reflect on what's meaningful to you. Finding meaning in moments can teach us about ourselves, what we value, how we treat others and ourselves, and the importance of connection. This fosters a greater sense of self-expression and creativity. It also encourages us to get out of our comfort zone, go beyond what you know and see something new. Push yourself to a new height.

  3. Connects You to Nature + the World Around You Mindful Photography often requires you to explore being outdoors, being in nature lowers our cortisol levels, improve moods and boost cognitive functions. It quite literally is good for your biology! When these biological qualities balance out, we are able to access a deeper sense of gratitude and calmness. It also allows for more meaningful experiences.

Our mental health is imperative to daily living. We must carve out time dedicated to caring for ourselves so that we can show up better for others, make healthier choices and live more authentically. Does this resonate with you? How will you practice mindful photography in your life?
